The year is 1972, and from the speakers at Holbækvej 10 in Roskilde, the sound of one of the biggest hits of the time, “Popcorn” by synthpop group Hot Butter, is streaming.
This was definitely a single that 15-year-old Jørgen “Twiggi” Juul would take with him to work that evening, where he was scheduled to DJ at another gig at the Youth House in the evening club on Parkvej in Roskilde.
His first major DJ job was at the Town Festival in 1975 in Roskilde together with Ronalds Festival Tivoli at the old barracks area, where a disco was to be held in the hall of the Youth House. After that, things moved quickly. In 1978, the Motorcycle Club MC 74 began hosting parties at the Youth House once a month to raise money for their club.
For many years, Twiggi.dk provided disco services in candy tents for the annual SID Summer Camp, which was held in various cities around Denmark.
In addition to playing as a DJ and providing disco services for parties throughout the country, Twiggi.dk also took on sound and lighting jobs:
- 1980: Sound engineer for Miss Denmark for Claus Jespersen.
- 1981: Sound engineer for Miss Denmark for Tommy P.
- 1981 and many years forward: Johnny Reimar Party Show, all his many children’s shows including Donald Duck Show, Smurfs, Trolderik, Mummy-trolls, Rasmus Klump, and as an extension of this, touring with Disney shows in Denmark and Norway, as well as doing sound for Donald Duck mini cup football.
- 1999-2002: Twiggi.dk handled the entire production of the Miss Denmark Show.
- 1996 to present: Providing light and sound for event solutions and for Discotek in Parken. Since then, several other permanent venues have been added, including Nimb, Tivoli, Kollekolle, Regatta Pavilion, Ledreborg Castle, Hotel Prindsen, Comwell Roskilde, and many others have also chosen Twiggi.dk due to the company’s flexible solutions.
- 2004: Twiggi.dk started small by providing equipment for gymnastics shows for DGI/Roskilde, which has grown over time. From spring shows in Roskilde Hall to local performances in associations from Lyngby to Borup.
- 2006: Collaboration began with DJ Kjeld Tolstrup to provide DJ equipment for his various jobs around Denmark. The collaboration lasted until Kjeld Tolstrup’s all too early death in March 2011.
Today, Twiggi.dk provides systems, sound, and lighting for many different types of parties and events. There is hardly a birthday, wedding, company party, high school party, youth club, or hall party that hasn’t been visited by Twiggi.dk when it was time to dance and celebrate. When customers called to inquire about booking a disco, everything was done to live up to the company’s motto: “No Party Is Too Small, No Party Is Too Big.”
Often, multiple staff were needed for jobs on the same evening, and over time, well-known DJs such as Christian Flagstad, Florina Fastina, Lars “Daddy” Kjær, Michael Juul Sørensen, and Jørgen De Mylius have been employed.
Christian Flagstad, seen in the picture on the left, was not only a good colleague and DJ but also a very good friend of Jørgen Twiggi, and his all too early death deeply affected Jørgen. But when Jørgen walks through his record collection, he can remember Christian Flagstad; Jørgen Twiggi inherited a large collection of records from Christian Flagstad.
Christian Flagstad died of cancer on Christmas Day in 1987 at the age of only 51. Honor to Christian Flagstad’s memory, Jørgen Twiggi.
The Single
In 1986, they released their own single under the name Twiggi Band with the title “Disco World.” The single was a “must-have” in record collections, and many of their DJs still have it in their collections today.
The single was released in connection with their 15th anniversary. At that time, they called themselves Twiggi’s Disco World (Twiggi.dk). It was primarily to celebrate the first 15 years with mobile discos, but the release of the single was also an expression that they intended to continue.
They are one of the very few mobile discos that have released a single under their own name, if not the only mobile disco that has ever done so. It is now more than 50 years since they played their first job, confirming that they really wanted and want to give their customers “a place you want to go” - namely: Disco World.
The core is the permanent staff of DJs, some of whom have worked for Twiggi.dk for 25 years, and with their experience in music, Twiggi.dk’s customers are assured the right DJ for the right job.
In 2006, Jørgen changed his surname from Juul to Twiggi, so it matched more naturally with the company he runs. The company name is now simply twiggi.dk, but the logo remains the same as it has always been. Therefore, there is often great joy of reunion when the black trucks with the well-known logo arrive with the equipment for the evening’s party.
Twiggi.dk has kept up with the times and will continue far into the future. In 2012, it’s not Johnny Reimer, but among others, the street festival Distortion, Tivoli, and Parken, who among many others have benefited from having equipment delivered from the company on Kløvervej (now Ledagervej, but the location is the same) in Roskilde.
More than five decades have passed since the first record was played by a slightly tense and nervous DJ named “Twiggi.”
